The idea for SHELTR began with a chance encounter in a Montreal park. Arcana co-founder Joel Yaffe, met a homeless man whose story deeply resonated. “He had an disturbing story,” Joel recalls. “This was someone educated, who had worked in tech, had a family, and through a series of unfortunate events found himself homeless. What struck me most was not just his plight but how the traditional support systems had utterly failed him. He didn’t just need money—he needed a path to reclaim his independence.” This moment combined with experiences living in downtown Montreal, a block away from two major shelters. Joel witnessed firsthand the harsh realities of homelessness, from rampant drug and alcohol abuse to the inconsistencies of cash handouts that perpetuated the cycle rather than solving it. These experiences solidified his resolve to create a system that addresses root issues, moving individuals from the streets into stable housing.

Over the past eight years, this philanthropic vision has come to life through the support of like-minded angels and venture philanthropists. Focused on impact over profit, these collaborators have been instrumental in turning SHELTR into a platform that rebuilds lives and empowers communities.
